As a mental health professional in private practice I work with people of varied life experiences, each of whom are on their own unique journey. Couples/marriage counseling, individual counseling (youth, adults), and family counseling; topics ranging from relationship issues (e.g., parent-child relationship, husband-wife relationship, dating) – to – personal mental health (e.g., anxiety, depression, self worth) – to – professional health and wellness (e.g., goal accomplishment, career discovery/transition) – to – family and extended family relationship dynamic issues. There are various presenting challenges clientele come to my office to receive help for, today’s blog article will focus on the identified athlete. Specifically, through the years some of my clientele have included young children who define themselves as athletes based upon their sport of interest, to the High School level, college athletes, and professional athletes of whom have discovered their profession and their passion as one in the same. Let us take a moment to think about the following: what happens emotionally to a person when he defines himself as an athlete (whether it is football, basketball, baseball . . .) is no longer an athlete? If your identity is as an athlete, and you are no longer an athlete, what’s next? [click to continue…]

In contrast to the usual focus of my blog articles which provide tips, insight and perspective on varied mental health topics, relationships, marriage, dating, parenting, and timely topics in the news (e.g., politics, sports, celebrities) through my lens as a Psychotherapist/Marriage and Family Therapist, this blog rather shares my personalized experience as a mother. Specifically the topic is: you know you are a football mom when… (of course, moms and dads of children who play other sports certainly will relate to much of this, but… today’s topic is, well, you get the idea. Here it is, my top 8 ways you know you are a football mom. [click to continue…]

Various studies report the link between chronic marijuana use and mental illness (e.g., anxiety, depression, schizophrenia). Yet painfully, far too many are ignoring this and rather preach a use in moderation philosophy rather than a just say no lifestyle. As a mental health professional I help parents every day with the fight against what is becoming a cultural norm. Specifically, I help parents to hold the philosophy and teach their children marijuana abstinence rather than use in moderation, despite living in a culture where the use of marijuana is becoming more and more acceptable with legalization playing a significant role in the acceptance of what is unacceptable.  [click to continue…]

As a mental health and wellness professional it is my opinion that the issues on the docket for a healthy America in the Trump vs. Clinton election are of the utmost significance. Yet, we are finding ourselves in an election cycle where character interpretation and analysis has become the focus of discussion as of late. Thus I ask you, is it likeability, character, or the issues – that really matter? Do they all matter? How much is interpretation vs. verifiable fact? Do we believe what we want to believe? Topics of today’s blog article include:

  • Examples of how this election has effected people – bringing out the nasty
  • Character of the President
  • The likeability factor
  • Make America Great Again

During an interview on The O’Reilly Factor on FOX News on October 6th 2016, I entered the No Spin Zone to discuss technology and it’s effect on our every day lives. Bill O’Reilly asked me for my observations regarding phone addiction and I shared on air that I am seeing a compulsion, a need, and a yearning to connect with others. I explained that the phone has become a vessel for that very connection, asserting that “whether you are sending an email, or texting, or checking your Facebook status, or checking Twitter, . . . this device has become an appendage.” [click to continue…]

Bill and Hillary Clinton- whatever side of the political isle one is on, we can all agree that this couple certainly may be referred to as a power couple. A movie documentary that provides it’s audience with the story of Bill and Hillary’s past and present as individuals, their political alliance, business partnership, and marriage, with commentary and observations woven throughout the movie from various esteemed professionals would make for an interesting movie indeed. Clinton Inc The Movie, provides for this very experience for the audience of viewers. The Clinton’s political alliance remains, even though they have experienced much reported rocky roads throughout their marriage in marriage and politically. Their marriage has remained, through much publicly observed marital trauma (e.g., repeated cases of infidelity- and in the public eye). They are what may be deemed as a business, a partnership, in essence; a business partnership, and a powerful business partnership at that. A brand? AKA Clinton Inc. Most certainly. Clinton Inc The Movie is a documentary produced by Doug Sain who is best known as the producer of ‘2016 Obama’s America’ and based on author Daniel Halper’s New York Times best selling book. The writer/director for Clinton Inc The Movie is Bill Baber. Clinton Inc The Movie presents the true story of an American dynasty.  [click to continue…]

NFL’s Patriots Jimmy Garoppolo in last night’s game utilized smelling salts as part of his football experience. Whether you agree with this method or not, as a mental health professional I see the value when professionals in the public eye acknowledge an anxious moment. It reminds everyone of the normalcy of emotions and the importance of managing them. Even though smelling salts have been known amongst the sports industry for quite some time, viewers do not always notice it on air. With this recent example of sports and smelling salts in the news that is quite the water cooler talk today, as well as posted throughout various forms of social media, I decided to take a moment to utilize this high profile use of smell and consider it in the context of professional athletes. Additionally this blog article will address the role of smell for the non-athlete, and/or simply in consideration of the everyday – the psychology of smell.  [click to continue…]

Anthony Weiner has been caught sexting – again, and again, and again. We remember as a public when he resigned from congress stemming from a sexting scandal (2011). We remember the heart felt speech Huma Abedin gave when she shared that they received much counseling. We remember his code name “Carlos Danger” allegedly to keep his sexting undercover. Technology is a vessel in which to play out impulsive compulsive yearnings and that I want what I want when I want it behavior. Technology has made it easier thereby exacerbating the fantasy to move from in one’s mind, to expressing it to another (e.g., sexting).  [click to continue…]
